When we walk into a shop we are immediately faced with a lot of temptation. The retailer wants us to buy as much as possible so that they can make money from us and we will want to make sure that we are not buying more than we need or that we can afford. There are things that we can try which could help to stop us spending more money than we can afford.
Take a List
It can be a good idea to take a list with you when you are shopping. This does not just mean for the supermarket, which many people do use, but also for other shops as well. This can help you to not get so distracted by the other items that are for sale and help you to focus on what you need. Also, if you forget to get something that you did need, you will venture back into the shop and this will mean that you could end up being tempted to by more than you need all over again.
Set a Budget
It can be a good idea to set a budget. So have an idea of how much money you can afford to spend in the shop. You could get a bank balance before you go in and then you will know how much money you have available, making you allow money for anything else you need to buy as well. It can feel a bit restrictive doing this but it will mean that there is no way that you will spend more money than you can afford this way.
Only go in Shops Selling What You Need
Once we are in a town centre or wherever then we can be tempted to browse in and out of lots of shops. Although this can be fun, it will mean that you could be tempted to buy a lot more things than you need and so you could end up spending more than you intended. It does take a lot of self-discipline as we are often used to just wandering from shop to shop and having fun browsing all of the items that are available.
Ask for Help so you are not Browsing too Long
It can help speed up your visit to a shop if you ask the shop assistant to help you. You can ask them if they will find the items you need or point you in the right direction. This will mean that you will not have to walk all around the whole shop in order to find what you need and therefore you will not be so tempted to buy other things that you were not intending on buying.
Do not Shop too Often
The more often we shop, the more likely it will be that we will buy items that we do not really need. This means that if we can keep our shopping trips sown to a minimum, we will reduce the chance of us buying extra items. So, try to wait until you need quite a few things before you go out shopping or only go shopping when you really need something.
Make Online Shopping Hard
Buying online has its own set of temptations as you will not be able to avoid being near to an online shop. Try to make it hard for yourself though. Perhaps make sure you do not associate a payment card with any shops so you have to go through the hassle of finding the card and typing in the number as that will make you think about whether it is really worth the effort. Also do not save links to pages for online shops or have the apps on your mobile device to help you to avoid temptation. Lastly, do not subscribe to their mailing lists or follow them on social media as they will send out all sorts of tempting newsletters or post about items that you will want to buy.
